Council discusses project, names stores, restaurants

By Jessica Webster
City Editor

The multimillion dollar project known as Wabash Landing dominated West Lafayette City Council discussion Monday night, and this time the project had some recognizable names attached to it.

The Hilton Garden Inn hotel, Goodrich Quality Theaters, Fazoli’s, Levee Liquors, Hallmark Cards, De Fuego Mexican Restaurant, Lafayette Travel and Cruise, Hollywood Video, University Spirit, Hatworld, Cellular Express and Mrs. Field’s cookies will replace the dirt, cement and scaffolding in the Levee (if all goes according to plan).

And, yes, Starbucks will soon be on the list. TGI Friday's restaurant is a strong "maybe," along with a few other restaurants.

Indianapolis-based developer Herman Renfro made a short presentation to the council and included brief information about parking changes and the four-level Hilton hotel. Following Renfro’s presentation and an in-depth explanation of the Wabash Landing budget, the council approved an appropriation of $75,000 for four facets of the Wabash Landing project: 1) Brown Street utilities, 2) infrastructure improvements, 3) road improvements and 4) a pedestrian walkway. Council member Gerry Keen, R-5th District, was the only member to vote against the appropriation due to not having enough time to review the project’s budget.

• In other business, Purdue juniors Brooke Devers, Joe Drabik and Kelly Englehart briefed the council on various charitable activities the Purdue Greek system and the Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity have participated in. Drabik, vice president of operations for the Interfraternity Council, and Devers, vice president of operations for the Panhellenic Association, outlined the organizations’ charitable service report, which included 19,502 hours of community service and $64,000 raised for charities.

Englehart, vice president for service for Alpha Phi Omega, said, "(Council member) Brad Windler asked us to come tonight so we could represent students who do community service.

"We wanted to show the council that students do more than drink and party."
