Athletes to compete at championshipsCarri Long and Amy Spellmeyer, members of the Purdue women's track and field team, will compete this weekend in the NCAA Championships. All events will begin at noon on Saturday at the Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Ark. A native of Brazil, Ind., Long will compete in the high jump competition. She won her first Big Ten title in the high jump on Feb. 26 at the indoor championships with a leap of 5-foot 10-inches. Long also placed third in the pentathlon (3,664 points) that weekend. On March 4, she finished seventh at the USA Track and Field National Championships. Long's best height for the season is 5-11 1/4 in a Feb. 12 victory against Indiana. Spellmeyer became the first woman vaulter to clear 13-foot in Big Ten Conference history. She placed ninth, second among collegians, at the USATF National Championships with a career-tying height of 13-0 1/4. Spellmeyer holds the seventh-best mark among collegians in the country. On Feb. 25, she won her first conference title at the indoor championships with a 12-9 1/2 vault. She was the Purdue female Athlete-of-the-Month for January and has won four of the six meets she competed in. |
