Women's tennis team anticipates close match at Indiana

By Brian Peloza
Staff Writer

The Purdue women's tennis team will be looking to take the home court advantage away from the Indiana Hoosiers at 11 a.m. Saturday in Bloomington.

By traveling to Bloomington a day early to practice on the courts, Coach Mat Iandolo hopes to gain an advantage for the match.

Iandolo said the courts in Bloomington are much faster than what the Boilers are accustomed to at their home courts.

"If we get used to the fast courts I think we will have the edge with our players," Iandolo said.

The Boilers have a record of 5—4 and are ranked 51st in the country. The Hoosiers come into the match ranked 37th and are 7—2.

The Boilers are coming off a weekend of solid play. Purdue split two weekend matches. Kentucky narrowly defeated Purdue 5—4 March 3. Despite the tough loss to Kentucky, the Boilers came back the next morning to defeat the Utah Utes 7—2.

The Boilers No. 1 doubles team of Jennifer Embry and Shannon Taheny are ranked 16th in the nation.

Purdue will have to prepare for the many different styles of play that Indiana exhibits.

Iandolo said IU has players that have an attacking game, while others will look to play a baseline game.

The Boilers will be trying to avenge a close 4—3 loss to the Hoosiers last year.

"I would expect another close match," Iandolo said.

Iandolo thinks the key to the match will be whether or not the Boilers continue their aggressive play.

"I like our chances if we come out and play like we have been," said Iandolo. "We need to play to win points."
