Senate meeting to cover price of parking permitsBy Mary Jester Parking permit fee increases will be discussed at today's University Senate meeting. The University resources policy committee will present a report on parking, policies and traffic. Charles Roth, professor of agronomy and chair of the University resources policy committee, said the parking system has undergone few changes since it was established. Last fall, the parking and traffic committee formed an ad hoc committee to examine the system. The report suggests changes which will be voted on in April. At this point, the changes are conceptual. Details will be determined later if the changes are passed. The report addresses keeping the bus systems available to students, faculty and staff and suggests increases in parking permit fees. Roth said that even after all increases are implemented over an eight-year period, parking permit fees at Purdue would still be among the lowest rates in the Big Ten. "Even with the increases, it's still very, very cheap to park here," said Roth. He said permit fees are so low they don't even cover the cost of maintenance of parking; the University has to cover a large part of those costs. Roth said the parking program was established in 1963, with a slight increase in parking permit fees in 1971. Stan Hem, chair of the University Senate and professor of industrial pharmacy, said the student affairs committee will present two documents for discussion. The first addresses the possession and use of alcoholic beverages in or on the University property. The second document addresses prohibiting the use and distribution of firearms on University property. The documents will be voted on in April. Hem said the educational policy committee will present a report about discussions with PSG on the plus-minus grade document that was passed a few years ago. The discussions concerned whether the changes that were passed were appropriate. The committee is not suggesting any more changes now. Hem said the athletic affairs committee will submit an annual report. The chair and vice-chair for the next term of the University senate will be elected at this meeting. |
