Committee submits report on parkingBy Mary Jester A report on parking was submitted by the University Parking and Traffic Committee to the University Senate during Monday's meeting. The senate discussed how the growth of the University has contributed to the difficulties in parking. An objective the report addresses is to provide needed parking spaces and improvements in traffic flow. One proposal was to increase parking permit fees, which have not changed since a slight increase in 1971. The permit fees cover approximately half of parking expenses. Another proposal was to limit the number of C permits sold while keeping them at the same rate as A permits. Those with A permits would then be kept from parking in C spaces. If the report is approved, faculty and staff would also be allowed unlimited access to CityBus as well as students. The increase of fines and construction of a remote lot before Fall 2001 are two other proposals from the report. A report submitted by the Athletic Affairs Committee examined the status of student athletes. "The goal is to have graduation rates for student athletes at or better than the student body," said Morgan Burke, athletic director. The average grade point average for student athletes for the spring 1999 semester was 2.84 and the average GPA for the same semester for all Purdue students was 2.83. Purdue's graduation rate of student athletes is 73 percent, while the graduation rate for student athletes in all Division 1A schools is 58 percent. Sally Hastings, associate professor of history and chairperson of the Educational Policy Committee, said the committee reviewed documents that were passed in 1997, 1998 and 1999. They are not proposing any changes on the current grading system at this time. A report was submitted by the Student Affairs Committee. The report proposed adding a statement on alcoholic beverage possession and consumption to the student misconduct statement. However, restriction on alcoholic beverage possession and consumption is included in other University policies. Linda Mason, associate professor of entomology, was elected to serve as the chair for the next term of University Senate. Larry Glickman, professor of veterinary pathology, was elected to serve as the vice chair. Their terms will begin next September. |
