Program to demonstrate 1,000 years of agriculture

By Brad Ramsay

Imagine a trip through time where a person can see all the changes in agriculture technology that have happened to the world in the last 1,000 years; on Thursday night, the imagination can rest.

At 6:15 p.m. in Stewart Center's Loeb Playhouse, "Ages of Agriculture" will take place.

This program is part of the Millennium Celebration, a series of cultural events marking the history of United States and its journey into the year 2000.

Indiana's first lady, Judy O'Bannon, is the chairperson of the Hoosier Millennium, an initiative telling the story of the last 1,000 years the Hoosier way.

Tom Turpin, a professor of entomology, said, "A lot of events have been organized — the arts, education, etc."

"Ages of Agriculture" is going to review the many changes in agriculture starting with pre-European colonization of Indiana.

Turpin said the evening will be a historical tour of agriculture all the way through to the millennium and that the program will pack a lot of history into one hour.

O'Bannon said in a statement, "This evening will help us consider that strong agricultural past and consider our role for generations to come."

The cast of characters who will chronicle the agriculture history include Purdue agriculture professors as well as students. The cast will all be dressed in period costumes.

Christy Denault, communications and information specialist for the dean of agriculture, said of the event, "It is a series of vignettes on the ages of agriculture from early agriculture of Indiana through the present and a look into the future."

The show is divided into five segments with each segment having a different narrator and lasting 10 minutes. The program is open to everyone and admission is free.
