Police arrest student on charges of battery

A Purdue student was arrested Tuesday on charges of criminal confinement and battery directed toward a female student acquaintance, according to the Purdue University Police Department.

A bystander called police and the victim reported she struggled with Jie Chi, a senior in the School of Science.

She reported that he held her against her will during a confrontation. Chi was taken into custody around 4 a.m. Tuesday.

The woman reported that she was walking back to her car after leaving Knoy Hall of Technology. When she reached her car, she noticed that Chi was in a car parked behind hers.

He allegedly confronted her, and they argued about their relationship.

The woman told police that Chi hit her and dragged her toward Knoy Hall when she refused to continue their discussion.

When the police contacted Chi at his apartment, he told them he wanted to take the woman back to Knoy Hall when the struggle developed. It was reported that Chi struck, choked and knocked her down during the incident.

Ronald Fosnaugh, captain of special services at the Purdue University Police Department, said the woman was not taken to the hospital but sustained minor injuries.

Chi was taken to Tippecanoe County Jail and a bond was set at $500.

Both charges that Chi was arrested for, criminal confinement and battery, are Class D felonies. Each one is punishable by a fine of up to $10,000 and/or a jail term of up to 1 1/2 years. Fosnaugh said Chi will appear in court for these charges.

According to the Indiana Criminal Code, criminal confinement is defined when a person knowingly or intentionally confines or removes another person from one place to another without their consent.

University regulations state that violations of the standards of conduct may be subject to administrative actions. Physical abuse or conduct that endangers or threatens the health of a person is one form of misconduct listed.
