Researchers study effects of consuming orange juice
By Andrea Falbo Researchers at Purdue are studying the effects of orange juice on individuals. "It has been reported that a high proportion of the population experiences some adverse effect following orange juice consumption. We are attempting to determine if this is true and the nature of the most common symptoms," said Rick Mattes, professor of foods and nutrition. Adverse symptoms of drinking orange juice are heartburn, acid stomach or any other effects that a person says are related to drinking orange juice. Mattes said it is possible that one quarter of the population who consumes orange juice is affected by it. Mattes and his team are interested in these effects because orange juice is a rich source of vitamin C and antioxidants. With this research, Mattes is trying to determine exactly what in orange juice causes these effects. If the researchers determine what causes these symptoms, there is a possibility of removing that cause from orange juice to stop these symptoms. The study has no results as of now because researchers are still trying to find study participants. Anyone can contact Mattes about participating in this research, and then he must go through a few tests to determine if he qualifies to participate in the study. No one else, on campus or elsewhere, is researching the effects of orange juice. Research on this subject is being conducted in Stone Hall. The decision to start the research on this topic evolved out of conversations with orange juice companies; however, Mattes designed the project with his technicians. |
