Tickets explain platforms at PSG meetingBy Kelly Lucas Members of Purdue Student Government received an early look at each presidential and vice presidential candidate's platforms at Wednesday night's PSG meeting. One ticket Jim Vaca, a junior in the School of Management, and Patrick Mondi, a junior in the School of Technology presented its "Absolute Vision for a New Tomorrow." Some of the issues Vaca and Mondi presented include increasing Purdue pride through the implementation of a Homecoming parade and providing student seating in Mackey Arena, looking at diversity and the construction of the International Center, beautifying campus, implementing a Purdue post office and so on. "We will work hard to make Purdue a better place," said Mondi. Clay Slaughter, a freshman in the School of Science, and Kurt Weiand, a junior in the School of Liberal Arts, presented their three main platforms: parking, classroom space/enrollment and tuition increases. "We're here to get an education, not hunt for a parking space," said Slaughter. Both Slaughter and Weiand would like to see the Ross-Ade Stadium lot converted into an open parking area, an increase in commuter parking on and around campus, and construction of an additional parking garage on or near campus. Chris McManama, a junior in the School of Management, and John Gerber, a junior in the School of Management, presented their five-point plan to the members of PSG. Points included improving the relationship between international teaching assistants and students, increasing student involvement on campus, bringing in more keynote speakers, generating more school spirit and improving PSG. "We want to make PSG a more open and welcome place," said Gerber. Students will be able to ask each ticket questions at a debate expected to be held on Tuesday. Elections will be held on April 4, 5 and 6. |
