Purdue bands to perform jazz concert this weekendBy Nathan Cross The cool breezes of spring are blowing into Purdue and along with those cool spring breezes comes a spring concert from the Purdue Band. At 8 p.m. on March 25 in the Loeb Playhouse, three Purdue jazz bands will be "Cruisin for a Bluesin." The show highlights Purdues Jazz, Concert and Lab Jazz Bands; the best part is that the show is free. The concert, "Cruisin for a Bluesin," takes its name from a song by Andy Weiner. The director of the concert is M.T. "Mo" Trout. Brian Neudorff, a senior in the School of Science, said, "Mo is an enthusiastic great guy whos very passionate about what hes doing and you can see it in his directing. Mo has fun with his work." The Concert Jazz Band is slated to start with a jazzy set that includes "Fat Cat," "Labelmates," Ernis Watts "Some Kind a Blue" and Cole Porters classic "Evry Time We Say Goodbye." Neudorff, who is also a member of Boiler Brass, said, "This year, concert jazz band is really looking forward to shows because its one of three shows, so its big deal. We have been practicing really hard." The Purdue Jazz Band is headed for the Montreux Jazz Festival in July and this will be one of the last times to see them perform this semester. The Jazz Band will perform last to end the evening with a set of blues numbers including "After Youve Gone," "Bye, Bye," and a new addition to the band;s blues arsenal, "On the Purple Porpoise Parkway." The band will only perform once more on campus this semester when it will hold Jazz on the Hill at 5 p.m. on April 28 at Slayter Hill, as part of Purdue Bands Twilight Concerts series. There is no reason for Purdue students to complain about the fact that there is little to do on campus on the weekends. Especially this weekend when there are three great Purdue bands performing for free. |
