Boilers split series with Fighting Irish

The Purdue softball team split its two-game set against Notre Dame in South Bend on Thursday afternoon. The Boilermakers (15-14) dropped the first contest 8-0 in six innings and won the second 2-1.

In the first game of the double-header, an Irish seven-run second inning proved to be too much for the Boilers. In the inning, the Irish had seven hits.

Nicole Crouse (3-4) took the loss for Purdue, surrendering the seven runs in 1 1/3 innings of work. She struck out one and walked none.

Offensively, Purdue could muster only two hits off Irish pitching, a double by Heidi Foster and a single by Jessica Jones, both in the fourth inning.

In the night-cap the Irish took an early 1-0 first inning lead before Purdue got on track, scoring two runs in the top of the second. Back-to-back singles by Jones and Chrissy Davie gave Purdue runners on first and second with nobody out to lead off the inning. Angi Roembke followed with a bunt, which the Irish fielded and threw out pinch runner Briana Hensley at third. A Crystal Inman double to the wall in left and a Keely Povlitz sacrifice fly scored Davie and Roembke, respectively, to put Purdue on the board and in the lead 2-1.

Sophomore Meagan Dooley (4-5) picked up the win. She tossed seven complete innings, surrendering am unearned run and inducing 14 Irish hitters to ground out. Roembke finished the game 2-for-3 offensively with a run scored and a stolen base.

Purdue hosts the Boilermaker Invitational this weekend.
