Boilermaker tennis team loses two matches during weekendA tough weekend for the Purdue women's tennis team ended with a 7-0 loss to Northwestern in Evanston, Ill. The loss dropped the Boilers to a record of 6-8 with a 1-3 record in the Big Ten. Boilermakers Jennifer Embry and Shannon Taheny nabbed an 8-6 victory at the No. 1 doubles spot. But the senior duo, ranked 15th in the nation, recorded Purdue's only win on the day. At No. 2 singles, Lynsey Fick and Lisa Walgenbach fought hard, but lost 9-7 to Lia Jackson and Marine Piriou. In singles action, the Wildcats captured wins at every position. The Boilers also dropped a 5-2 against Illinois on Saturday. In doubles, Lynsey Fick and Lisa Walgenbach were ready for action at the No. 2 position. The duo defeated Simone Kung and Michelle Webb with little effort in a 6-0, 6-1 decision. Embry and Taheny lost in the No. 1 doubles spot in a close match to Illini Brooke Ferney and Natascha Loebnitz 9-8 (6). Embry began the singles lineup for Purdue at No. 1, and picked up a victory when her opponent, Eldina Fazlic, retired. At No. 4, Purdue's Melissa Iqbal handed Natascha Loebnitz a 6-2, 6-4 loss. But the Boilers couldn't get another victory. Purdue will return to action at 11 a.m. Saturday in Baton Rouge, La. when it faces the LSU Tigers. |
