Purdue student files complaint

A Purdue student who filed a complaint against the West Lafayette Police Department last week alleging "unjustified use of tear gas" said he felt intimidated by the officers when he filed.

Geno Schilling, a senior in the Schools of Engineering, said the officers told him to consider what he was doing because the department is still reviewing videotape of rioters. According to Schilling, the officers said if Schilling was on tape, he could be in trouble.

"You know, it was just their tone," said Schilling. "It was kind of harsh and intimidating and (one officer) seemed really upset that I was filing a complaint.

"Another officer, who was really nice, told me they have photographs of everyone who was in the riot and he said even if I was just standing there, not doing anything, I could still be charged for participating. He asked again if I still wanted to file the complaint … and I was surprised."

West Lafayette police chief Dan Marvin said the officers were not trying to intimidate the student; they were attempting to be fair.

Exotic dancer upsets neighbors

A sparsely dressed Lafayette stripper has been practicing her exotic dance routine in the front yard for all to see for two years.

And the neighbors are ticked.

The neighbors are even more upset over the increased male traffic since the stripper added a 10-foot pole to her outdoor act two weeks ago. But the dancer, Lafayette resident Kim Mattes, is within her legal rights and the neighbors can do little about her performances, according to local law enforcement.

Purdue to continue allowing MP3s

Even though over 200 colleges have banned MP3s from their schools, according to John Steele, the director of the Purdue computing center and an associate professor of computing science, Purdue students don't have to worry about this threat to their computer songs.

"We don't monitor the traffic (of the downloading of MP3s), but we know about it through people who tell us about it," said Steele.
