For more information, please contact DeAnna Shonk at 494-7201 Speech, debate team to hold public performance TuesdayMembers of the nationally qualified Purdue University Speech and Debate Team will hold a public performance at 8 p.m. Tuesday in Stewart Center, Room 214D. The team will be competing at nationals held at Ohio University Thursday through April 17. The performance is open to the public. Board of trustees namesfour to professorshipsOn Friday, the Purdue Board of Trustees approved the appointments of four faculty members to named or distinguished professorships. Jay Gore, a professor of mechanical engineering, is the new Reilly professor of combustion engineering. The named professorship was previously held by another mechanical engineering professor, Normand Laurendeau, who has been named to the newly established Ralph and Bettye Bailey chair of combustion engineering. Arden Bement, head of the School of Nuclear Engineering, will relinquish the Basil S. Turner distinguished professorship in engineering to become the David Ross distinguished professor of nuclear engineering. Mamoru Ishii's distinguished professorship of nuclear engineering has been designated the Walter Zinn distinguished professor of nuclear engineering in honor of the first director of the National Argonne Laboratories. Purdue now has 49 distinguished professors and 21 named professorships. Co-op students receive first $300 scholarshipsStudents living in Purdue's cooperative housing are discovering that leadership and scholarship pay literally. Heather Quirk, a member of Glenwood Cooperative and a junior in the School of Liberal Arts, and Ryan Lee, a member of Fairway Cooperative and a senior in the School of Agriculture, are the first recipients of $300 awards that are presented to the outstanding female and male cooperative house member each month. Two $1,000 scholarships will be given to the male and female who excel academically, exemplify cooperative principles and are actively involved with their house, the cooperative system and Purdue. This scholarship plan is a pilot program for an endowment that will be created at the end of this academic year. The endowment is designed to disperse funds annually for cooperative housing member scholarships and leadership opportunities. Programs offer education on dangers of drinkingThe Student Wellness Office is offering educational programs, and the Grand Alternative 2000 Committee is offering substance-free activities to any residence halls, fraternities, sororities, co-ops and classes that are interested. Events are offered during April. The purpose of the events is to educate students about the dangers of high-risk drinking and to offer substance-free activities. Barnes and Noble to host three writer's workshopsA freelance creative and business writer, Kathy Mayer, will be facilitating three free writers' workshops at Barnes and Noble Booksellers. No registration is required. All workshops are held from 7 to 8 p.m. The first workshop will be tonight and the topic will be "Similes: The Secret to Great Writing."
