Invite's outcome disappoints track coach
The Purdue women's track and field team placed fourth at the five-team Purdue Invitational Saturday. The Boilermakers (4-3, 1-1 Big Ten) finished with a score of 195 points, 30 behind meet champion Ball State. Central Michigan finished second with 211.50, Penn State was third at 206 and Michigan finished fifth with 129.50. The Purdue Invitational is one of 11 meets nationwide sponsored by the United States Track Coaches Association, which are aimed at head-to-head team competition and scoring. "I'm very disappointed with the outcome of today's meet," Purdue coach Ben Paolillo said. "This was a meet that was supposed to emphasize the team as a whole, and we didn't compete as team. Outside of a few individual performances, we lacked the intensity and urgency needed to win this meet. Hopefully, the team learned a valuable lesson today about competing together for a common goal, and we can turn this into something positive to build off of for the rest of the season." Individually, Shonda Robinson and Serene Ross stood out for Purdue. Robinson emerged victorious in both the 100 and 200-meter dashes. The junior ran a season-best time of 24.77 in the 200 to beat out Penn State's Tiffany Glenn, who finished second in a time of 24.84. Robinson narrowly missed her season best of 12.09 in the 100 with a time of 12.11. Ross finished first in the hammer throw with a toss of 185-8. The throw set a personal best and eclipsed Toyinda Smith's junior class record of 182-5. Ross also finished fourth in the javelin (139-1) and 13th in the discus (121-2). Other Boilermakers scoring event victories were Amy Spellmeyer, who set a meet record in the pole vault with a height of 12-0 3/4, and Carri Long, who went 5-7 3/4 in the high jump. |
