State files charges against student

From Staff Reports

The state of Indiana filed charges on Saturday against Jie Chi, a senior in the School of Science, for battery and criminal confinement, according to the Tippecanoe County Courts. Chi's first hearing will be held at 1 p.m. on May 15 in Tippecanoe Court Two.

Chi was arrested on March 21 on charges of battery and criminal confinement during an alleged confrontation involving a female student acquaintance.

They were allegedly arguing about their relationship. The woman told police that after she refused to continue their discussion, Chi hit her and dragged her toward Knoy Hall of Technology.

The confrontation occurred near Knoy Hall of Technology. Chi reportedly struck, choked and knocked the woman down during the incident. The woman suffered minor injuries.

Criminal confinement and battery are Class D felonies. Each one is punishable by a fine up to $10,000 and/or a jail term up to one and one-half years.
