Two former volunteer firefighters recently joined the Purdue University Fire Department. They are fulfilling their life-long goals while improving Purdue and the surrounding community.

Jefferson F. Howells was born in West Lafayette and graduated from Purdue in 1997 with a bachelor's degree in Organizational Leadership and Supervision. Between classes, Howells was a volunteer firefighter for Wabash Township.

After graduation, Howells worked as an operations supervisor at C.P. Morgan, a residential homebuilder in Carmel, Ind.

Howells then returned to firefighting when he came to Purdue.

"I realized that this was the occupation that I really enjoy doing, and where I saw the greatest amount of growth both personally and professionally," Howells said.

"I like the personal satisfaction that I achieve by being available for all medical and emergencies 24 hours a day," he said.

Howells said he plans to pursue a master's degree while working for the Purdue University Fire Department.

Howells said that it's not always a pleasant situation when he is called into work, but the assurance that he is helping people motivates him.

"The satisfaction of seeing peoples' faces, that's when I know I've made a difference," Howells said.

Howells said that while at the Purdue Fire Department he'd like to become more involved on campus and in the community.

Eric C. Williams was a volunteer firefighter in Monon, Ind., for five years before he came to work for the Purdue Fire Department. Williams said he was working as a quality manager at Girtz Industries, a sheet metal fabrication company, when he finally realized he wanted to fulfill his life-long goal of becoming a career firefighter.

Williams said there are considerable differences between working as a volunteer firefighter in Monon and as a firefighter at Purdue.

"There's a lot more going on here … it's more exciting," Williams said.

Williams said he enjoys working at Purdue because of the salary and benefits and because he is close to home.

While at Purdue, Williams said he'd like to pursue a degree in business management or fire sciences.

In addition to his work at Purdue, Williams said he likes to spend time with his wife and two children.
