Lafayette Brewing Company to host Zydeco Cajun bandBy Nathan Cross From Lafayette, Ind., to Lafayette, La., Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys are cooking up some saucy Cajun rhythms. Zydeco Cajun swamp rockers Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys have been deemed "Cajun music's most likely to succeed" by Billboard magazine. At 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the Lafayette Brewing Company, one of the most-celebrated Cajun rock bands from Lafayette, La., hopes to win over the Indiana crowd. The show is open to all ages, and the kitchen and bar open early at 6 p.m. for Cajun delicacies such as gumbo, jambalaya and red beans and rice. The sound of Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys is deeply rooted in Louisiana's cultural history. Seventeenth century French settlers who were deported from Nova Scotia settled in present-day Louisiana. The "Cajun" culture grew over time, feeding off of influences such as German, Afro-Caribbean, Native American and Scots-Irish. This cultural mixture is vividly evident in the Cajun music of today. Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys capture this sound and blend it together with modern musical influences to produce an entertaining music sound. Riley leads the band with the festive accordion and is backed by the Mamou Playboys. The Mamou Playboys are Kevin Dugas (drums), Roddie Romero (guitar), Peter Schwartz (bass) and David Greely (fiddle). Greely and Riley trade off singing responsibilities, which are mostly done in French because a quarter million Cajuns and Creoles still speak the language in Louisiana. Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys cover a lot of upbeat musical ground during their shows by incorporating French and English songs, quick-paced, fiddle-driven waltzes and accordion laden two-steps. Tickets for the all-ages show can be purchased at LBC, Von's Records, JL Compact Discs and McGuire Music for $8 or at the Lafayette Brewing Company in downtown Lafayette on the day of the show for $10. |
