Reader debates columnist's view

Dearest Stonegarden, I never knew you were such a noted theologian. In your column on gays you mentioned that God didn't ban certain foods for spiritual reasons, but for public safety. Why then did He not ban beef as that can surely be just as dangerous if improperly stored and prepared? Why can Christians eat pork and not Jews? Afterall, not that much changed in the way of food storage and preparation between Old Testament times and New. The real reasons can be found in the Bible (Mt 15:11 NIV.) Then again, that would mean you would have to read more of those "obscure" views.

Homosexuals choose lifestyle

I would like to invite Robert Mate, in his class on hate and violence, to take an honest look at one theory explaining what is wrong with our society: Examine the implications of our country's widespread social acceptance of homosexuality.

We are beginning to reap the fruits of America's "coming out" over the last 30 years. In order to gain tolerance of its lifestyle, the gay community has convinced a good portion of our society that we have no choice in what we are. Our discovery of genetic tendencies has been used to excuse a lifestyle that, 50 years ago, was considered a psychological disorder. How can we act surprised when this philosophy of excuses, devoid of any personal responsibility for one's actions, brings about violence?

I am tired of having homosexuals ask the rest of the country if we choose to be straight. The simple fact is, yes we do. Genetic impulses do not dictate behavior. Engaging in any sexual activity, homo or hetero, is a choice; I do not care if you desire to be gay. That, in and of itself, is no argument. If it were, we could never condemn child molesters and rapists, as they surely desire that type of sexual activity.

Of course, now we move onto the consenting adults justification. What of drug abuse then? Snorting coke is the action of a consenting adult. Does that justify the act?

Homosexuals possess inherent knowledge of the immorality of their actions. In our counrty, it is illegal to discriminate against homosexuals. It is in vogue to be gay. Why, then, is the gay movement so intent on hearing every group in America condone its lifestyle on a moral level? Because, when people feel guilty, they like to hear others' assurances that they've done nothing wrong.
