Purdue's men's and women's ultimate Frisbee clubs didn't let anyone stop them from dominating on their home field over the weekend to advance to regionals.

The women's club team started its weekend off with three losses on Saturday but came back to win three games on Sunday vs. IU, University of Chicago and Bradley.

The women ended up winning against Bradley 13-0 due to a forfeit.

Women's captain Rachel Gast was impressed with Sunday's outcome.

"Our women's team went 3 and 3 between (Saturday and Sunday), but (Saturday) we didn't do as well as (Sunday) because we didn't have people handle positions in the field," said Gast.

The team's name is Brickhouse because, according to the members, it is made up of seven solid players, much like a house made of seven solid bricks.

The women defeated IU 13-6 and University of Chicago 13-8.

"It was a pretty good day for us, but the wind did affect us," said Gast. "It is especially important if the wind is going up and down for us because it is more likely that we score."

The women did much better this year in comparison to last year's sectionals. They have a good chance to surpass regionals to make it to nationals.

"We first have to focus on regionals, which is in two weeks, before we start thinking about nationals," said Gast.

Regionals will be hosted by Purdue on April 29 and will have universities from Michigan, Ohio and Illinois competing in the event. There will be 16 women teams at Purdue and, together with the men, there would be about 30 teams.

D.I.S.T.O.L., which stands for "Did I say that out loud," is the men's Frisbee club name. The group, which has a 20-20 record this season, proved to be good enough to advance to regionals.

Brian Scott, last year's captain, was also impressed with the outcome of his team results.

"All of the other tournaments we compete in are just one-weekend and stand-alone tournaments, and this was the tournament that qualifies you to go on to nationals," said Scott. "(Saturday) we went 3-2 in pool play, and (Sunday) we had elimination rounds. (Sunday) we went 2-1; we lost our first game in the quarterfinals and afterwards won two games."

In the pool play, Purdue beat Northern Illinois, lost to Indiana 13-8, beat Bradley 13-7, beat southern Illinois 13-3 and lost to Illinois 13-9.

Sunday in the quarterfinals, a 13-9 loss to Ball State didn't slow the men as they came back to defeat Chicago 13-11 in the consolation game. In the last game — the Boilers' battle for fifth place — they won 13-11 against Indiana.

The men have only six returning players this year with 14 newcomers.

The Boilers have finished in fifth place both this year and last year.

Both teams have great expectations for next month and have the confidence to make it to nationals.

"I am very confident in doing well in regionals because it is now proven that we can get out of close games like this," said Scott.
