Boiler tennis team defeats Penn StateThe Purdue women's tennis team beat Penn State 5-2 on Sunday at the Sarni Tennis Center in University Park. The win followed the Boilers' 5-2 loss to Ohio State on Saturday. In Sunday's win, Purdue's 19th ranked duo of Jennifer Embry and Shannon Taheny knocked off Pilar Montgomery and Alison Barnett 8-6 at the No. 1 singles spot. The Boilers (9-11, 3-5 Big Ten) were unable to capture any other wins in doubles action, though, resulting in one point for Penn State. In singles action, Purdue won five of the six matches. Embry claimed a 6-2, 6-1 over Montgomery early at the No. 1 spot, while at No. 2, Taheny defeated Rebecca Ho 8-6. Melissa Iqbal moved up in the lineup to No. 3 and responded by shutting out Barnett 6-3, 6-4. Lisa Walgenbach overpowered Martina Kopacova 6-0, 6-4 at the No. 5 and Lynsey Fick held on for a 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 win over Jan Perez. |
