Senate to discus student conductBy Mary Jester An amendment to the regulations for student conduct regarding possession and use of alcoholic beverages or dangerous weapons will be voted upon at Monday's University Senate meeting. If it is accepted, the student misconduct statement in the University Regulations handbook will include a formal disciplinary procedure. It will specify possible disciplinary actions such as probation, suspension or expulsion for possessing alcoholic beverages or dangerous weapons on University property. "Currently, there is a regulation against alcohol on campus," said Stephen Akers, executive associate dean of students. Listing these two items under the student conduct code would allow students to better understand the regulations. Twelve items are already listed under this section, including academic dishonesty, theft, use and possession of narcotics or dangerous drugs and indecent conduct. Akers said the new statement will be in compliance with the current regulations. "It gives us more discretion of addressing problems when they occur," he said. Regulations do not allow alcohol or the possession and use of dangerous weapons on University property. Akers said that if the statement were changed, it would make the rule clearer to students because it will be listed alongside other activities listed under student misconduct. Linda Mason, vice-chair of University Senate and assistant professor of entomology, said this meeting will be the last meeting for both President Steven Beering and for University Senate chair Stan Hem, professor of industrial pharmacy. The University Senate Nominating Committee will present nominees for advisers to the University Senate committees and to fill vacancies for service positions on the committees. The University Senate will vote upon the University Parking and Traffic Committee's proposal for changes in the parking program which was presented at the last meeting. The meeting will be held at 2:30 p.m. in Stewart Center Room 302. |
