Alcohol, weapons regulations to move in handbookBy Mary Jester The parking proposal originally assigned to be voted on at Monday's University Senate meeting was relabeled as a report that will stand for information purposes. Instead of voting on the concepts, the Senate decided to pass the proposal onto the Board of Trustees, which will make the final decisions on the parking proposal. Amendments addressing the possession and use of alcohol and the possession and use of dangerous weapons were passed at Monday's meeting. The regulations on these issues are not being changed; they are being listed under the Student Conduct section of the handbook. Until now, these regulations have been listed only under the University Facilities section. "The rule is the same. It's just bringing it into that section of the handbook where it's more prominent to students," said Tony Hawkins, dean of students. The new sections state that the possession or use of alcoholic beverages in or on University property, unless expressly permitted by University relations, and the possession, use or distribution of explosives, guns or other deadly weapons unless authorized by the University, is considered misconduct subject to disciplinary penalties. "These regulations are included in some of the other Big Ten student conduct regulations," Hawkins said. He used Indiana University as an example. Hawkins said the change is meant to increase student awareness of these regulations. "Students more often have occasion to look at the section under Student Conduct than the use of University Facilities," he said. Hawkins said over the course of this year, he has received several phone calls notifying him of students who had been taken to the hospital as a result of alcohol poisoning. "It's just another reason for bringing people's awareness up on the whole issue of alcohol," he said. The listing of regulations under the Student Conduct section will be an abbreviated version of the explanation under University Facilities. Exceptions to these regulations will be listed under University Facilities. Hawkins said the number of student misconduct cases where the determination was made that alcohol was present has increased from 37 to 57 percent from 1990 to 1999. However, alcohol cannot be determined as the cause of the misconduct. Hawkins said the concern with the dangerous weapons regulations has been related to violence across the country. |
