Police arrest nine students

P olice entered a house Tuesday to arrest one person for minor consumption but ended up arresting 12 people including nine Purdue students on drug and alcohol charges.

According to Lt. Ron Faith with the Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Department, police discovered drug and alcohol paraphernalia at 4 a.m. at 431 N. Chauncey Ave. in West Lafayette.

West Lafayette police Capt. Michael Francis said police found 30 grams of marijuana, one gram of cocaine, 40 hits of LSD, hallucinogenic mushrooms and alcohol at the residence. According to Faith, ketamine, a drug used as a sedative in veterinary clinics, was also found at the residence.

Francis said this drug has recently been stolen from veterinary clinics in Tippecanoe County and surrounding areas, and police will be looking into a possible connection between the stolen drugs and the drugs found at the residence.

Six of the Purdue students arrested were freshmen. One was a sophomore and two were juniors.

According to police reports, the Purdue students are:

• Ryan Hicks, 19, freshman in the School of Science, 432 N. Chauncey Ave.; charged with maintaining a common nuisance, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, minor consumption, possession of marijuana under 30 grams, reckless possession of paraphernalia.

• Richard Melville, 18, freshman in the School of Education, 431 N. Chauncey Ave.; charged with maintaining a common nuisance, minor consumption, felony possession of marijuana.

• Andrew Mason, 23, junior in the School of Technology, 427 N. Chauncey Ave.; charged with visiting a common nuisance.

• Patrick Rodman, 22, junior in the School of Agriculture, 320-209 Brown St.; charged with visiting a common nuisance.

• Jason Swartz, 19, freshman in the School of Management, 312 Cary Quad NW; charged with visiting a common nuisance and minor consumption.

• Brooke Dull, 19, freshman in the School of Consumer and Family Sciences, 407-A McCutcheon Hall; charged with visiting a common nuisance, minor consumption and resisting law enforcement.

• Ryanne Litka, 19, freshman in the School of Liberal Arts, 126 Northwest Meredith Hall; charged with visiting a common nuisance and minor consumption.

• Sonya Lehman, 18, freshman in the School of Consumer and Family Sciences, 1799 Harrison Hall; charged with visiting a common nuisance and minor consumption.

• Shannon Doherty, 19, sophomore in the School of Consumer and Family Sciences, 400 N. River Rd #603.; charged with visiting a common nuisance and minor consumption.

Others charged were:

• James Dick, 21, 558 S. Columbia St., Frankfort, Ind.; pending charge on possession of cocaine and charged with visiting a common nuisance.

• Arian Saghafi, 19, 400-18 Northwestern Ave.; charged with minor consumption and visiting a common nuisance.

• Erin Carrosquero, 19, 246 S. Salisbury Apt. 9; charged with visiting a common nuisance and minor consumption.

Joe Bennett, vice president of University relations, said the names of the arrested Purdue students will be passed on to the dean of students. Bennett said he has no official information about the students involved, and that he was first informed of the incident by an Indianapolis TV station.

Faith said Tuesday evening that most of those who were arrested had posted bond.

Francis said the confiscated items from the residence will be reviewed and further charges are possible.
