Police to set up checkpoints
From Staff Reports
The West Lafayette Police Department is
teaming up with county, state, excise and other local police forces to
conduct sobriety checkpoints tonight.
West Lafayette police Capt. Michael Francis
said the checkpoints will encourage students to drink responsibly as Grand
Prix weekend approaches.
"We know this is going to be to an extremely
busy weekend for law enforcement agencies, sororities, fraternities and
co-ops," Francis said.
Francis said there will be plenty of signs
identifying sobriety checkpoints, and drivers should have their driver
license and registration ready.
Francis wouldn't say if the checkpoints
would continue through the rest of the weekend.
"Students need to keep their eyes open
it's a possibility," Francis said.
Francis said that in addition to the sobriety
checkpoints, police will have extra officers on duty for Grand Prix.
"This is a way to get the message across
that we want it to be a safe weekend and we want to students to have a
fun time, but we want them to obey the laws and not get injured," Francis
said.
