Breakfast club draws debate

By Erica Sagon
Asst. City Editor

Breakfast club is a tradition that West Lafayette mayor Sonya Margerum would like to end; however, state law says local government doesn't have that authority.

Breakfast club is an early morning tradition where students — some dressed in outrageous costumes — fill local bars at 7 a.m., typically before football games and Grand Prix.

"I think it's a rather sorry sight to see people starting to drink at seven in the morning," Margerum said. "I think it's something that we need to urge the bar owners to do away with."

Dan Adams, owner of Where Else Bar in West Lafayette, said his bar will participate in breakfast club this weekend.

"I don't see anything wrong with being open for breakfast club," Adams said.

State law, in fact, says there's nothing wrong with being open for breakfast club.

Indiana Excise Police Lt. Michael Easterday said the West Lafayette government has no jurisdiction to change Indiana bars' hours of operation — 7 a.m. to 3 a.m. Monday through Saturday — which are set by the Indiana Alcoholic Beverage Commission. Easterday said no local ordinance to request that bars open later could supercede state law.

Margerum said she plans to contact local bars to request that they open later in the morning. Margerum also said she might elicit the help of city council members.
