Event enjoyed despite rain

The smell of popcorn mixed with the smell of rain as thousands of Purdue employees took part of the day off Thursday.

Storms throughout the day did not hurt the attendance of Spring Fling Thursday in the Recreational Sports Center, even though three of the most popular events had to be cancelled due to rain.

"Spring Fling always attracts people, regardless of the weather," said Tamara Rice, assistant dean of students and member of the Spring Fling planning committee.

University stops plans for new hall

Purdue has put a stop to any plans they may have once had to build a new residence hall.

President Steven C. Beering said the University has tried for a number of years to build a new residence hall and has tried to get private developers interested, but the city of West Lafayette has not been able to provide the University with the infrastructure.

"There had been some talks with a private developer but there were no set plans," said Lanny Wilson, director of administration for University residences. "The private developer would have been developing the plans not us."

Tornadoes require safety preparation

Last Friday, while the graduates were in the Armory waiting to march to Elliott, Thomas Cooper, fire safety specialist, was holding his weather radio and watching the radar for signs of the severe weather that was going to hit.

A severe thunderstorm can turn into a tornado at any time, he said. Because the graduates were waiting in the Armory, they could have been in danger if a tornado had indeed hit.

Cooper said structures with wide-span roofs like the Armory are susceptible to collapsing during a strong tornado.
