Presidential nominee Martin Jischke has a Purdue hat adjusted on his head by his wife, Patty, during Tuesday morning's press conference. Jischke was announced as Purdue's 10th president in Loeb Playhouse in front of a crowd of about 500 people. Jischke's first day on the job will be Aug. 14 - a week before classes start for the fall semester.

Purdue announced Tuesday to a crowd of approximately 500 people that Martin Jischke, former president of Iowa State University, will become Purdue's 10th president.

"This is an extraordinary honor; we are eager to become members of the Purdue family," said Jischke, who was accompanied by his wife, Patty.

The crowd, consisting of mainly Purdue faculty, rose to its feet and sang "Hail Purdue" to welcome Jischke as the new president.

However, the decision to name Jischke as the next Purdue president is not yet official. The Board of Trustees will meet on June 1 to confirm the appointment of Jischke. According to Tim McGinley, president of the search committee and chairman of the Board of Trustees, all trustees have committed to voting for the appointment of Jischke.

After a two-year search, members of the presidential search committee can finally take a long awaited break.

Martin Jischke will become Purdue's 10th president, and many search committee members are glad the search is over.

"I'm glad we're done," said George Bodner, professor of chemistry and member of the search committee. "I've been fascinated with the quality of the applicants, the extraordinary care with the process of selection and the openness of the Board of Trustees."
