Board to vote on JischkeBy Kelly Lucas Purdue will officially have its new president Thursday when the Board of Trustees meet to confirm the appointment of Martin Jischke, former president of Iowa State University. Purdue announced that Jischke would be Purdue's 10th president May 16, but the appointment could not be confirmed until June 1. According to Tim McGinley, chairman of the Board of Trustees, all trustees have committed to voting for the appointment of Jischke. The trustees will also meet to vote on the approval for authorization to plan, finance and construct numerous campus building renovations including Wetherill Laboratory of Chemistry, Heine Pharmacy Building, the Purdue Memorial Union Restaurant and Entomology Hall. According the Wayne Kjonaas, vice president for physical facilities, both the Wetherill and Heine renovations are part of ongoing renovations. Kjonaas said the renovation of Wetherill has been going on for approximately 15 years, but this particular renovation project will concentrate on Rooms 175-180 of Wetherill. "It's a very old building and this is the first round of renovations for those rooms," said Kjonaas. The trustees will also vote upon the approval of renovations to the Purdue Memorial Union Restaurant. Kjonaas said the project will convert the old tray return, located in the southwest corner of the Union basement, into an Italian-style restaurant. The seating area across from the tray return and the Union Market will also be converted into an eating area for the restaurant. Kjonaas said the restaurant will serve pizza and other Italian foods. The renovations to Entomology Hall are a combination of renovations to the old building and an addition to the back of the building. Kjonaas said the new addition will house the department of forestry and the construction should start in approximately a year from now. The Board of Trustees will meet at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Room 304 of the Purdue Memorial Union. |
