Program curbs drunk driving
From Staff Reports
Blitz 23 has been underway in West Lafayette since
May 21 and will continue until June 3.
The program, which is part of operation pullover,
is designed to get the impaired and dangerous driver off of the road.
Mike Francis, captain of special services at the
West Lafayette Police Department, said the government program provides
grant money for the police department, which can, in turn, be used for
traffic enforcement.
2000 is the third year in a row that West Lafayette
has been using this program.
Operation pullover varies from place to place, many
more people may be pulled over for speeding and checkpoints may also be
set up.
Francis said, "We have no plans to have sobriety
checkpoints for this blitz."
From 1998 to 1999 there was a 26 percent increase
in the number of auto accidents that have involved a drunk driver.
