Construction continues on the River Market apartment complex. The building is expected to be completed August 1.

Despite appearance, River Market nearing completion

Despite the appearance of the River Market complex in downtown West Lafayette, it seems to be right on schedule for completion in late July.

Tina Armstrong, property manager, said it is a four-story building and each floor and section are at a different stage. The appearance of completion depends on which area of the building at which one looks.

Even if the workers were behind at any point, they seem to have caught up. Armstrong said the construction was being done six days a week and now they have cut it down to five.

In spite of the look of it now, the building promises to be unique when completed, and the complex will have small businesses located on the first floor.

City may spray for mosquitoes

West Lafayette is usually sprayed each year to cut down on the mosquito population.

David Downey, street commissioner of West Lafayette, said there has not been a date set yet for the mosquito spraying this year.

"We usually wait for a population count and a complaint count," Downey said.

New president deserves fresh start, students say

The Purdue student body has mixed feelings about their new president Martin Jischke, former president of Iowa State University.

Although some Iowa State students and faculty describe Jischke's demeanor as dictatorial and autocratic, some Purdue students feel that those labels are normal and the student body needs to give Jischke time before labeling him.

"More than anything, it's a small delegation of students complaining," said Tiara Nibbs, a senior in the School of Liberal Arts and a student representative on the presidential search committee. "These kinds of complaints are normal. Students have to let their president know what they want; if they feel as though he is unapproachable, they need to let him know," Nibbs said.
