The School of Education has received a $1.1 million grant from the Preparing Tomorrow's Teachers to Use Technology (PT3) program to enhance the technological proficiency of future teachers.

President Bill Clinton announced June 3 that $43 million would be awarded to help fund 122 grants to train new teachers to use the latest technologies effectively in the classroom. All the grants are part of the Preparing Tomorrow's Teachers to Use Technology program.

"The ultimate purpose of computers in the classroom is to boost student performance and help children learn," said Clinton, in his address. "That can only happen if teachers have the training to best use technology. Today, two out of three teachers with access to a computer say they don't feel well prepared to use it in class. We owe it to America's children to help their teachers become as comfortable with a computer as they are with a chalkboard."

Land annexation debated at city council meeting

The issue of annexation of land for apartment complexes led the agenda for Monday's West Lafayette city council meeting.

The annexation, which is sited on the North and West sides of Lindberg road and east of McCormick roads, would bring about the creation of a new apartment complex in the area.

Alan White, a representative of the petitioners for annexation and developer, said that he wants to go through the city first before the county.
"We have the alternative to go through the county, but we asked for voluntary annexation," he said.
