Two chains sell booksBy Brad Ramsay There are many things going on during a student's freshman year at Purdue including joining organizations, adjusting to college life, meeting professors and new friends and shelling out the cash to buy textbooks. Purdue has two major bookstore chains on campus, Follett's and University Bookstores. Follett's has three locations on campus that sell textbooks: Purdue West, the Village and Boiler Bookstore near Mackey Arena. University Bookstores has two locations, one at the corner of State Street and Grant Street and one on Northwestern Avenue across from Mackey Arena. If new students aren't looking for large crowds, they should avoid the first Monday that classes start. Both Dave Shaw, manager of Follett's Village Bookstore, and Michele Hickner, art supply buyer for University Bookstores, agree the Monday that classes start is the busiest day of the year. Hickner and Shaw said that the bookstores offer assistance to students who have trouble locating books for their classes or do not know exactly what book they are looking for. Besides books, both stores offer a wide variety of supplies students need for classes. Shaw said, Follett's offers practically every thing that students need for classes. Hickner said University Bookstores has educational supplies, software, office supplies, art supplies and Purdue spirit goods among many others. If students drop a class they have up to 10 days to return the book to the bookstore with a receipt. Follett's offers a special feature to its customers. If student decides to purchase his or her books at Follett's they can return their books to any chain of the store. For example, if they purchased the book at Follett's Purdue West Bookstore, they can return it to Follett's Village Bookstore if it is more convenient for the student to do so. |
