Campus

Cars should be left at home

By Kelly Kingen
Summer Reporter

With very few parking options for incoming freshmen, students living in the residence halls may want to pack a comfortable pair of tennis shoes rather than their car keys.

Terry Ashlock, the director of facilities for University residences, said, "We are telling freshmen that they can't bring cars."

With more students enrolling at Purdue, parking has become scarce around campus. Ashlock said that their primary concern was to meet the parking needs of the upperclassmen and that it was not necessary for freshmen to bring their cars because transportation was available for them.

CityBus, in conjunction with the University, provides free busing service for students who have a valid student ID. CityBus runs throughout campus, West Lafayette and the Lafayette area. The Lafayette Limo, a busing service, provides transportation for students needing to catch flights from the Indianapolis International Airport.

"Any student who lives 1.5 miles from campus can purchase a C permit," said Susan Black, who is the supervisor of parking facilities.

These students can purchase a C permit for $30 and can park in most parking garages and the gravel parking lot north of the football field, Black said.

"Any student working 30 hours a week for Purdue can purchase an A or B permit," Black said.

Those students can purchase an A permit for $72 or a B pass for $30. With an A or B parking permit, students can park on the lower levels of the parking garages and in lots that are located closer to campus.

Black said, "All passes, A, B, and C, will be available Aug. 1 here in our office."

Students wanting to buy a C permit need a valid license and a local address. Students wanting to purchase an A or B permit need to complete a form at the Visitor Information Center located on Northwestern Avenue.
