Newspaper experience offers something for allDid you ever want to write for a newspaper? The Purdue Exponent is a 19,000 daily circulation newspaper that prints to the Purdue community. We are independent from the university and employ over 100 students. When you come onto our campus this fall and begin to think about what student organizations you want to join, think about us. There are three main departments to the Exponent. Each employ full-time students and pay them for their services. The first department is the newsroom. The newsroom is responsible for the editorial content of the newspaper. They write the stories, shoot the photos and design the graphics. Everything that you read in the newspaper is from the newsroom. It has employed over 100 students at various times during the past year. The next department is the advertising department. While it is smaller in numbers of people, it is not less important. The advertising department keeps the issues free to students and the newspaper running. They are responsible for all of the ads that you see. They design the ads, network with the clients and keep the rest of the newspaper in financial check. The final and smallest department of the newspaper is the production department. This department is responsible for printing the newspaper. It involves a process in which the layout (design of the pages) is put onto computer. It is then sent down to our own press only a few colleges in the nation own their own and distributed free to campus. Without them, the newspaper would never look as good as it does. Those are the departments of the newspaper. We generally have a job for anyone who wants it. We even have students who have no or little desire to go into journalism or advertising. The managing editor of the newsroom is an industrial engineering major. The advertising director is a management major. The chief photographer is a CPT major. You can be in any major and still be one of us. So when you come to campus this fall and want to join an organization that will look outstanding on your resume, think of us. You don't have to have any experience in newspapers or writing. The only reason why the editor in chief showed up was that it was something to do. This can be one of the best experiences in your college career. Don't pass it up. |
