Carrey portrays typical self in 'Me, Myself & Irene'

By Kelly Lucas

Contrary to other Bobby and Peter Farrelly brothers' films, such as "There's Something about Mary" and "Dumb and Dumber," "Me, Myself & Irene" pulls at your heartstrings rather than tickling your funny bone.

The movie focuses around Charlie/Hank Baileygates, portrayed by Jim Carrey, and his love for Irene Waters, portrayed by Renee Zellweger. Charlie — a kind-hearted, mild-mannered Rhode Island State trooper — has a split personality, his alter-ego being Hank — the potty mouthed, sex-toy loving, suppressed inner self. Both Charlie and Hank fall in love with Irene.

The story begins with Charlie's wedding day and is narrated by Rex Allen, Jr. Shortly after Charlie gets married, his wife has an affair with an African-American midget, leaving Charlie to raise triplet sons by himself. After his wife leaves him, Charlie becomes the town push-over. After years of being ridiculed and walked on, Charlie snaps and we meet Hank.

My first reaction when walking out of "Me, Myself & Irene" was, why did they have to show all the funny parts in the previews? However, the movie does have some hidden comedic jewels, one being the surprisingly funny performance by Charlie's sons, portrayed by Anthony Anderson, Jerod Mixon and Mongo Brownlee.

Charlie's sons are the most remarkable comedy trio since the Three Stooges. But don’t be mistaken, they aren't as funny as these legends, but I could see these three in their own movie.

Carrey's performance, on the other hand, is comical but typical. Of course he's funny in this movie, he's funny in all of his movies. Enough said.

However, what's really great about this movie is its use of music. Hearing the Foo Fighters wail, "You know you make me break out," while Charlie's personality switches from sweet-hearted Charlie to cold-hearted Hank is irreplaceable. Music by Wilco, Bob Dylan, Freedy Johnston, Cake and the Brian Setzer Orchestra also accompany the film.

Overall, the movie will make you laugh, but the storyline is pretty dull. The directors have to resort to using dildos and albinos to make the audience laugh. But what can you expect, it's a Farrelly brothers' movie.
