Reader dislikes wedding columnI was extremely disappointed in Nathan Dean's Friday opinion piece, "Columnist Offers Wedding Tips." In spite of the recent creation of Civil Unions in Vermont, Nathan perpetuates the myth that love, commitment and unity can only exist between a man and a woman. People can love each other and be just as committed and united in same-sex unions. Nathan's column represents the kind of narrow-mindedness that Purdue Equality Alliance is trying to change. Not only does Nathan so easily forget the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community, but Purdue purposefully shoves them aside. Even after both the University senate and student government recommended it in 1993, Purdue is the only school in the Big Ten not to include sexual orientation in its nondiscrimination policy. Oddly, Purdue does include sexual orientation in its anti-harassment policy. Purdue's hypocrisy allows our university to fire people based on their sexual orientation, but others can't call them "fags" or "dykes" on their way out, unemployed. Join Purdue Equality Alliance in its goal to amend Purdue's nondiscrimination policy to include sexual orientation and gender identity. Brian Szyper |
