Orschell finishes second at Open

Stacey Orschell, former Boiler and Big Ten Women’s Golfer of the Year, finished in second place at this year’s Indiana PGA Women’s Open.

Orschell, who won this same tournament as an amateur in 1998, was the first-day co-leader following Thursday’s 1-under 72. She was tied with Julie Carmichael, whose father is the women’s golf coach at IU, was also the co-leader following the day-one action at The Elks Country Club.

Carmichael, however, was able to hang on to her lead Friday and hold off Orschell in shooting an identical 72 — good enough to be crowned this year’s champion.

Orschell put the pressure on during Friday’s round — sinking a birdie putt on No. 10 to put her into a tie with Carmichael. Orschell, however, bogeyed three of the next five holes and Carmichael was able to clinch the victory.

Orschell shot a 75 on the final day of the two-day event, giving her a 147, which was three strokes off Carmichaeal’s 144.

Purdue’s Andrea Quandt fired a day-two 79, redeeming her first round 83, giving her a 162 and putting her in a three-way tie for 29th place.
