New director chosen to run office

The Purdue Women's Resource Office will acquire a new director when Karen Hall, former director of the Women's Resource Center at Miami University in Ohio, assumes the position in August.

"I'm excited to be coming to an institution with the reputation for excellence that Purdue has," said Hall, in a statement. "The university has already made great strides for women. I'm looking forward to working with the Purdue community to move it closer toward this goal."

Hall, who holds a bachelor's and master's degree in English from Michigan State, has extensive experience working with gender related issues.

According to Alysa Rollock, vice president for human relations, in the past, Hall has worked with issues surrounding self-esteem, sexual assault and sexual harassment. While in Ohio, Hall implemented a cooperative system in order to help Ohio universities and colleges deal with issues pertaining to sexual assault.

"She has a vision for the role of the Women's Resource Office and for the lives of women on campus, particularly students," said Rollock. "She has a wealth of experience and commitment to Purdue."

Rollock said not only will Hall bring commitment, dedication and experience to the Women's Resource Office, but she will foster an environment where female students can succeed.

According to Rollock, the Women's Resource Office was formed in 1981 and was originally established to serve female faculty members and examine problems of gender-based inequity, make changes in the university to improve the status of women and assist in the resolution of sexual harassment complaints.

However, the Office's primary purpose today is to improve the campus climate for women and to implement programs that address women's issues and gender-related concerns.

The Women’s Resource Office works with other University offices to provide support for women’s concerns, sponsor and implement programs for women, counsel and provide advice for women seeking assistance, assist University committees and so on.

Former director of the Women’s Resource Office, Becky Herrnstein, will assume a position at the University of Akron.
