Performer's music blends
international components

Very few students on campus have ever heard of
the award-winning classical musician performing tonight.
In fact, very few students have even heard of his
instrument.
But more than 280 tickets have already been sold
for Simon Shaheen's concert at 7 tonight in Fowler Hall in Stewart Center,
according to Adey Zaghab, the president of the Organization of Arab
Students.
The organization and the International Center of
Greater Lafayette are sponsoring Shaheen, and will host a reception
at the center immediately following the performance.
Sheheen plays the ud, a type of lute, and the violin.
He and his ensemble, Alcantra, play works that bridge classical Arabic
and Western music with strong Spanish elements. All of this is infused
with jazz components.
"His music is kind of different because it's not
pure Arabic music; it's a little influenced by jazz, I would say," said
Nidal Saleh, a member of the organization and a senior in the Schools
of Engineering. "The music has its own style. It's the kind of music
where you sit there and go deep and think about it. It puts you into
a different world of imagination. You are out of this world. I loved
it."
Shaheen was born in Palestine and lived there until
he came to the United States in 1980. Here he completed his graduate
studies in performance at the Manhattan School of Music and studied
performance and music education at Columbia University in New York City.
He has performed at The Kennedy Center, The Lincoln Center and Carnegie
Hall among other places.
"He's performed with some of the biggest performers
in the Arab music world; so judging from that, I think it should be
something interesting," Zaghab said. "He's going to be performing something
that many students here have never seen before."
Tickets are on sale at the door for $10 for students
and $15 for the general public.
