Press names Douglas to
All-America team
Katie Douglas has been named to the Associated
Press preseason All-America womens basketball team.
A senior guard/forward for the Boilermakers, Douglas
is joined on the team by Tennessees Tamika Catchings, Connecticuts
Svetlana Abrosimova and Shea Ralph and Georgias Kelly Miller.
"Its truly a great honor to be thought of
as one of the top five players in the nation, but I still feel I have
a lot to prove," Douglas said. "Although the recognition is nice, a
greater accomplishment would be to lead Purdue to success. Thats
the one Im after."
Douglas edged Notre Dames senior center Ruth
Riley for admission onto the list, receiving 23 votes. Catchings led
all players with 40 votes, followed by Abrosimova (29), Miller (29)
and Ralph (25). Douglas is the only player of the five that was not
named a first team AP All-American at the conclusion of the 1999-2000
season. She was a second-team selection after averaging 20.4 points,
6.5 rebounds, 4.7 assists and 2.4 steals per game.
This is one of many preseason honors for Douglas,
a 1999-2000 Kodak All-American. She was named the Big Tens preseason
player of the year, as well as a first team preseason All-American by
Lindys, Street & Smiths and Sports Illustrated for Women.
The Boilermakers open their season this Saturday
when they host Eastern Michigan in the first round of the 2000 Preseason
WNIT. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m.
