Purdue students prepare to compete in College Bowl

"Come with your A game or don't come at all."

That's the message Jeff Klemens, a senior in the School of Agriculture, wants his competitors to hear before they compete this weekend.

"Tell them to come with the good stuff," said Klemens jokingly, "Or don't come at all."

But Klemens isn't competing in football, basketball or soccer. He's competing in College Bowl, a national question-and-answer game that will send a team from Purdue to compete with other universities from across the country.

"It's kind of set up like Jeopardy but with teams of four people," said Tara Brink, a junior in the School of Health Sciences. "The questions can be about anything — history, science, popular culture; it's pretty miscellaneous."

Klemens, who is part of a team called C Squared, has helped his team get ready for competition by answering questions on the College Bowl Web site and by playing Trivial Pursuit.

"We really haven't prepared that much," said Klemens, "I just saw a flier in front of the Union and thought that it would be fun."

Klemens, who participated in a similar program called High Q in high school, isn't putting a lot of emphasis on winning this weekend.

"We have a decent chance of winning. We have a good team with some really smart people. I hope we can win a couple of rounds, and if we go all the way, it'd be really cool," Klemens said.

Each game is played by two teams and is separated into two halves. Teams score points by asking toss-up questions, which are worth 10 points, and bonus questions, worth 20 to 30 points. To qualify for a bonus question, a team must buzz in and answer a toss-up question. The team with the most points at the end of the game gets to move to the next round. Final round winners will have the opportunity to go to a regional competition in Valparaiso.

People are encouraged to come out and cheer on teams as they compete at 9 a.m. this Saturday.

"Last year a lot of people showed up to cheer on their friends or for the different organizations that formed teams," said Brink.

Purdue Student Union Board, which sponsors the competition, will provide the entry fee to Regionals for the winners and University Bookstore will provide T-shirts for the winners.
