Club to sponsor 5K run, walk

Early Saturday morning, the Health, Kinesiology and Leisure Studies Club will hold a 5K run and walk at Lambert Fieldhouse to promote good health and raise money for the club to go to conferences.

"I think students should get involved because not only will they be supporting the professional development of their fellow students, but they will be gaining a sense of accomplishment for doing something for their health and for completing a 5K run/walk," said Julia Searle, a junior in the School of Liberal Arts and public relations representative for the club. "In today’s society, many people do not accomplish either of those things."

The event will begin at 8 a.m., with last-minute registrations beginning at 6:30 a.m. in Lambert.

According to Kerry Wayne, a junior in the School of Liberal Arts and club president, the race will most likely be over by 10:30 or 11 a.m.

People can register the day of the race for $10 and $15. Searle said first-place finishers in all age groups and in the men's and women's divisions will win trophies. There will also be door prizes such as gift certificates and clothing from various area businesses.

Registration forms can still be picked up today in Lambert or the Recreational Sports Center, said Susan Flynn, a clinical assistant professor of Health, Kinesiology and Leisure Studies and club faculty adviser.

Wayne anticipates 40 to 50 runners and walkers to finish the race starting at Lambert, going down Stadium Street, past the Recreational Sports Center and the Birk Boilermaker Golf Course to Hilltop apartments, down to Ross-Ade Stadium, past University Street and all the way back to Lambert.

According to Wayne, last year’s turnout was 60; this year she hopes for the same.

There will be at least 20 club members assisting with the race, which is designed for ages ranging from elementary school to senior citizens.

The cost for the race is $15, which includes a Turkey Trot T-shirt, and $10 without the T-shirt. At the end of the race, everyone will receive a certificate, bagels and water.
