Ceremony to honor Veterans Day

By Corey Collins
Staff Writer

The Purdue Student Union Board is hosting a series of Veterans Day celebrations today. These events will begin at 11 a.m. in the Great Hall of the Purdue Memorial Union to honor those, both living and dead, who served with the U.S. armed forces in times of war.

The celebration will start with a traditional ceremony. The ROTC, Purdue Musical Organizations and American Legion Post #11 will take part in the patriotic aspects of the ceremony. Martha Montalvo, cultural events director, will open and close the ceremony and Bob Mindrum, director of the Union, will speak about the importance of Veterans Day.

A relationship between Veterans Day and the Purdue Memorial Union has existed since the building was constructed, embodying the ideas of the holiday. Mindrum said that after World War I, the Union was named after the 4,013 Purdue men and women who served and the 67 of them who died serving in the war. He said that the Union staff's attitude toward those who served is one of gratitude.

"We feel that those people who fought protected the freedoms of us today," said Mindrum.

Unfortunately, the magnitude of student's attendance of the Veterans celebrations is stifled by the fact that the United States has not had a particularly trying war in such a long time, he said. "Today's college students, except through movies and books, don't have a good gasp of what war is about," said Mindrum. "A university's primary goal is education and this will educate students about Veterans Day."

Gary Steinhardt, who served in both the Vietnam and Gulf wars with the army, is the Veterans Day speaker. He received his Ph.D. from Purdue and teaches an agronomy course.

Besides the festivities taking place today to honor the holiday, the Purdue Student Union Board is hosting other weekend events. There will be a pep rally on Saturday and a showing of "Scary Movie" in Fowler Hall today and Saturday. The College Bowl will take place from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday.
