BMV closes, awaits relocation

The Lafayette branch of the Bureau of Motor Vehicles is closing again for three weeks until it is relocated indefinitely.

The Lafayette branch, currently located at 323 Columbia St. in Lafayette, will be relocated to a spot in the Market Square shopping center on Elmwood Road in Lafayette. The branch will move in three weeks and, until then, Lafayette customers will have to travel to other area bureaus.

The Lafayette BMV was plagued with problems for the past two months as it closed and reopened numerous times because of employee complaints of sickness.

In mid-September the branch closed because there were not enough employees to staff it — they all had symptoms of a sickness they could not get rid of.

The branch reopened Sept. 25 and then closed again Oct. 4. The tests conducted in this time did not find any conclusive evidence to shut down the Lafayette branch indefinitely, so it reopened Oct. 25.

After being opened for only a little over one hour on Oct. 25, the Lafayette Fire Department and an emergency medical technician were called and the bureau building was evacuated for the rest of the day.

The branch reopened on Oct. 26 and has been open for 15 days. Tests were conducted in the branch during those days, and on Nov. 4 it was reported that an unknown substance was found in an air duct in the branch.

Alvin Hayes, a spokesman for the bureau, said on Nov. 7 that scientists were studying the material, but that no one had gotten sick for four days.

The branch will be closed until it is relocated to a building in the Market Square shopping center later this month.
