Purdue does not complain too
much
This letter is in response
to the letter by Dean Costakis, "College students complain too
much" (Monday). Dean says, "we have the largest group of whiners
and complainers on this campus than any other in the nation." Heavens,
can this be true? Well, that would be best proven or disproven by a
research study, I would think. My study consisted of surveying students
from four universities about how whiny they considered their campus
to be. They responded by giving a number, on a scale from one to 10,
(10 being the whiniest). According to Mark Grudberg, PSYCH 350 instructor
and local expert on psychological research, campus whininess is difficult
to measure, and it may be related to various local syndromes.
After collecting data from
four major nearby universities, including our own, the results were
as follows:
First Place: University of
Michigan (we got beat by Northwestern syndrome)
Second Place: Indiana University
(where has Bob Knight gone syndrome)
Third Place: Purdue University
(insurmountable goalpost syndrome)
Fourth Place: Ball State
University (where is the keg syndrome)
(It should be mentioned here
that surveys were sent to three Notre Dame students, but none responded.
Maybe they were too busy whining and complaining about Lou Holtz winning
more games with South Carolina than Notre Dame with Bob Davie.)
Deciphering the data above,
we placed only third out of the four universities. I guess were
not really the whiniest. So I assure all of my fellow students, were
not the "largest group of whiners and complainers," were
not even the largest in our fine state. What an amazing relief; had
Dean been correct, I wouldve had to transfer to Morehead State.
I bet no one complains there.
