Coach remains optimistic despite
low expectations

Although the men's cross
country team is not expected to make it out of this weekend's NCAA Regionals
and advance to the Championships, Coach Mike Poehlein still remains
optimistic going into the event.
"This time of year, usually
a lot of our guys are sick or the weather's bad," said Poehlein. "Right
now, no one has the sniffles and the weather report for Michigan (where
the meet will be held) is low 50s and no precipitation. We're running
well and just feeling good going in."
Saturday's regional meet
will be hosted by Eastern Michigan and take place in Ypsilanti, Mich.
The 30 to 45 teams that will compete are members of the Great Lakes
District, one of the eight districts across the country.
"We are by far the toughest
district," Poehlein said. "We have 45 Division I schools in our district,
so we are also the largest."
Out of each district, Poehlein
said, a minimum of two schools advance to the NCAA Championships. After
that, several at-large teams are selected to move on as well.
"We're anticipating five
or six teams will get out," said Poehlein. "We're not going to be one
of them, but we hope to move into the top 10.
"Donnie Fellows has a real
good chance to advance as an individual," he said. "If he does and then
goes to Nationals, he will probably be named an All-American. That's
what we're excited about."
Nearing this season's completion,
Purdue's team has tapered off its practices to "let their legs get back
under them," said Poehlein. "We've backed off a little, so we're quicker
and sharper. It doesn't put us ahead of anyone, since everybody else
is doing the same thing, but we feel good."
