Team prepares for Regionals,
anticipates return
of runners

Purdues womens
cross country runners are aiming for a strong team effort in Saturday's
NCAA Regionals.
With the expected return
of several injured Boilermakers, including No. 2 runner Teresa Kamleiter
and co-captain Jessie Wilder, Coach Ben Paolillo is optimistic heading
into Saturday's contest in Ypsilanti, Mich.
"Teresa got a stress fracture
in her left foot about seven weeks ago," said Paolillo. "Those take
about five to seven weeks healing time. We're looking forward to possibly
having her back (Saturday).
"Jessie has a nerve problem
in her foot. The doctors feel confident she's not doing damage (running
on it). She can run through it. She just has to run through the pain."
The Boilers are not acquainted
with host Eastern Michigan's course, a fact that doesn't necessarily
bother the team, said the coach.
"We're not at all familiar
with it," said Paolillo. "Very few teams are." He said that the last
time Eastern Michigan hosted a meet was10 years ago.
"The course is challenging,"
he said, "but it's not the hardest we've run on."
The Boilermakers haven't
done anything significantly different to prepare for a meet of this
magnitude, Paolillo said, but have primarily just followed their usual
end-of-season workout plan.
"We're trying to make the
body stronger. We load early in the season, then back off and take a
load off near competition. We lower the volume, up the intensity. It's
that time of year. All the other schools do this same thing."
Paolillo summed up the situation
saying simply, "Everyone's still on the same level."
