Purdue beats Eastern Michigan
in first round of preseason WNIT
Behind strong shooting performances
by center Camille Cooper and guard Kelly Komara, the Boilers won their
first game of the season a 84-60 victory over Eastern Michigan
in the first game of the preseason WNIT.
Cooper led the Boilers (1-0)
with 21 points on 7-of-8 shooting. The 6-foot-4 senior was also 7 of
8 from the free throw line.
"I think there emphasis tonight
was to stop Camille, which as you can tell didn't work too well," said
Komara, who added 15 points on 5-of-5 shooting. "They'd collapse in
on her and we'd kick it out to me and today I hit some of my shots and
kind of sparked the team a little bit."
In the game, the Boilers
shot 52.6 percent from the field, including 57 percent in the first
half. Purdue held Eastern Michigan to 42 percent shooting and forced
the Eagles into 18 turnovers. The Boilers also outrebounded Eastern
Michigan 36-22.
All-American senior Katie
Douglas had 12 points, seven assists and three rebounds. Freshman guard
Cherrise Graham added 10 points off the bench.
With the win, the Boilers
advanced in the WNIT to play either Georgetown or James Madison. The
second round game is at 7 p.m. Monday in Mackey Arena.
