Purdue's Tim Stratton has been named one of the top eight candidates for the inaugural John Mackey Award, presented to the best collegiate tight end.
Heading into No. 17 Purdue's final regular-season game against Indiana on Saturday, Stratton has 52 receptions for 532 yards with one touchdown. He is tied for sixth in the Big Ten with an average of 5.2 receptions per game and is ninth with an average of 53.2 yards per game.
The other players selected in the top eight are Alge Crumpler of North Carolina, Todd Heap of Arizona, Brian Natkin of Texas-El Paso, Derek Smith of Kentucky, Jerramy Stevens of Washington, Tony Stewart of Penn State and Tracey Winstrom of Nebraska.
The Mackey Award was established this April by the non-profit Nassau County Sports Commission. It was spearheaded by board member, former NFL quarterback and Syracuse All-American Don McPherson and is named after John Mackey, one of only two strictly tight ends to be inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame. A Syracuse graduate, Mackey played in the NFL for 10 years, was a five-time Pro Bowl selection and has been called the best tight end in NFL history.
